Shahad Alghamdi (he/him) of New York was selected for a Founders’ grant for gender affirming surgery with Dr. Scott Mosser. When asked what receiving this grant means to him, Shahad said, "For me, this surgery is a lifeline that I have long dreamed of. I am a young, queer, immigrant transman from a religious fundamentalist country where being trans is punishable by the death penalty. My family and my society intensely pressured me to conform to the gender norms expected of women, and I was punished and beaten when I tried to defy their expectations. I was in a cycle of severe depression, … [Read more...]

Z (he/him) of West Virginia was selected for a Founders’ grant for gender affirming surgery with Dr. Kenneth Wolf. When asked what this grant means to him, Z said, "This surgery will save my life. I had been so close to giving up on life because I suffered years of abusive relationships, misgendering, rejection by my family and community, and even physical attacks on the street. I would stay home because I couldn't bear going outside when I was feeling gender dysphoria and I was afraid of being jumped by transphobes. This surgery means the world to me because now I'll finally be able to look … [Read more...]

Black Lives—and Black Trans Lives—Matter
The Jim Collins Foundation's mission recognizes the fact that violence and discrimination against transgender people are both so prevalent that many transgender people struggle to survive, let alone save enough money for gender-affirming surgery costs. JCF stands in solidarity with our Black and Brown trans and non-binary siblings who struggle to be seen, be heard, and be safe. Unfortunately, safety is a luxury out of reach for many trans people of color. 2020 Founders’ Fund Grant Recipient – Rae
I remember when I received the call from the Jim Collins Foundation. I remember sitting in my car and crying my eyes out, calling my closest people to share the good news. I remember all twenty-eight years of my life replaying in my head as I reflected on the fact that I was finally here. Although I’ve desired surgery since childhood, it always felt like more of an unattainable dream than an actual event that I would get to experience. The Jim Collins Foundation changed that for me. Winning this scholarship made every previous defeat feel worth it. It made my five-year transition journey … [Read more...]
2020 Founders’ Fund Grant Recipient – Kaileb

The term ‘transgender’ popped up, and the definition hit me hard. That was it! In elementary school, I wore dresses every day. Even though it interfered during recess, I did it because I thought that’s what girls were … [Read more...]
